Farali Pattice recipe with step by step pictures

Farali Pattice is one of the favorite fasting snack across western India. Its been considered to be originated from Gujarat but now equally popular in Maharashtra region also. These spicy mixture filled Potato Patties are delicious in taste. I bet how many you make these, they will get vanished immediately after serving them.This super tasty snack is prepared during fasting, especially in Navaratra festival. These contain Arrowroot powder, which is basically starch of root stock of several tropical found typically Tapioca from Cassava and is considered fasting ingredient in India.

Do try this very simple to make and absolutely delicious to eat Patties. Presenting below my way of making this beautiful snack.

Farali Pattice


Farali Pattice Ingredients:

For base:

4 medium sized Potatoes, cleaned, boiled, refrigerated (for 2 hours minimum)

2 tablespoon of Arrowroot powder

Rock Salt (Sendha Namak) as per taste

For Filling:

1/3 cup of grated fresh Coconut

1 tablespoon of Cashew (Kaju)

1 tablespoon of Raisins (Kishmish)

3 tablespoon of Peanuts, roasted and peel removed

1 tablespoon of chopped fresh green Chilies ( around 4)

1 tables spoon of Ginger, cleaned, peeled and grated

1 teaspoon of Sugar

Rock Salt (Sendha Namak) as per taste

1 tablespoon of Lemon juice

2 tablespoon of freshly chopped green Coriander

1 tablespoon of Arrowroot powder for dusting the Patties

Oil for frying ( I have used refined Sunflower Oil)

Farali Pattice Method:

1. Take out refrigerated boiled Potatoes (minimum for 2 hours) and grate them with the help of a grater. This should amount to 2 cups of grated Potatoes. Now put them in a plate along with Arrowroot powder and Rock Salt (Sendha Namak).


2. Mix all things together and knead it for 2 minutes so that every things get mixed into each other and form a loose dough like mixture. Keep it aside.


3. Now in a grinder jar put roasted Peanuts, Cashews (Kaju), Raisins (Kishmish) and grated fresh Coconut.


4. Further, put chopped green Chilies, grated fresh Ginger, Sugar and Rock Salt (Sendha Namak) into it.

5. Finally put Lemon juice and chopped fresh coriander into the grinder.

6. Give a quick whisk to the grinder such that all things gelled together into one and form a beautiful greenish coarsely grounded mixture.

7. Now to prepare a Patty, grease your hand with vegetable oil and take a small amount of Potato mixture (prepared in step – 2) in your hand and roll it to form a ball.


8. After that press the ball with your hands Palm to flatten it as shown in below picture.


9. Place about a teaspoon of filling mixture (prepared in step – 6) at the center of the flattened Potato mixture.


10. Now slowly bring edges of the mixture to center with your hands.


11. With your fingers and hand bring the edges of the flattened mixture at the center such that edges are about to merge into each other as shown in picture below.


12. Very slowly seal the edges and roll the mixture to form a round ball.


13. Take Arrowroot flour in a plate and roll the Patty into it such that flour entirely cover the Patty. Gently press the Patty to flatten down its spherical shape. Do not press it too much, otherwise filling will come out of the Patty.


14. Repeat step-7  to step 13 to make all the remaining Patties from the mixture. With above measured ingredients, I could make seven Patties. 


15. Heat refined Oil in the Pan and put the Pattie one by one in it.


16. Fry them on medium flame.


17. Deep fry these Patties into a heated Oil on a medium low flame till both the sides are cooked and turn golden brown in color.


Serve these Farali Pattice with sweetened yogurt and enjoy it with your friends and family during fasting.
